Integrating Cultural Humility To Enhance The Provision of Cultural Competence in Social Work Practice
As social workers have traditionally and continue to work with diverse, marginalized and vulnerable members of society the understanding of diversity and culturally competence is significant. As the population of the United States grows increasingly diverse the need for social workers to provide culturally competent practice will also increase. The 2017 National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics charges social workers to be ethically responsible for providing culturally competent practice through developing an understanding of culture and forming a knowledge base of clients’ cultures.

In this workshop, the strengths and weaknesses of cultural competence practice will be presented utilizing frameworks by Cross et al., (1999) and Lum, (2011). A Cultural Humility framework (Tervalon and Murray, 1998) will be presented and compared/contrasted to cultural competence framework. Strategies for the integration of cultural humility to enhance the provision of culturally competent practice will be discussed.
