We will be having a free presentation detailing the creation of a #MeToo psychotherapy group in a women's prison. Come learn about the impact trauma as well as how you can bring a voice to the people you work with!

Speakers: Renee Walton, LSW working towards her LCSW, LCADC and is EMDR trained & Alexa Moubarak is a Mental Health Clinician with Rutgers University Correctional Health Care

Histories of sexual violence are so pronounced among incarcerated women that New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker labeled the overarching phenomenon “a survivor-of-sexual-trauma to prisoner pipeline.” This presentation describes the inspiration, implementation and outcome of a new psychotherapy #MeToo group that was developed for incarcerated women in a state prison in New Jersey.

Educational objectives:

• Identify the barriers to care for trauma survivors in the prison environment

• Describe a group curriculum for trauma survivors in the prison environment

• Discuss how to measure the efficacy of a group for trauma survivors

Renee Walton currently is a Mental Health Clinician at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility exploring the impact of trauma on women's lives. Renee is an LSW working towards her LCSW, LCADC and is EMDR trained.

Alexa Moubarak is a Mental Health Clinician with Rutgers University Correctional Health Care who designed and facilitates the #MeToo group at New Jersey’s only women’s state prison. She has worked in the Rhode Island and New Jersey prison systems, with experience in reentry services, policy analysis, research, program development and clinical social work. She received an MSW from Rutgers University.

Afterwards, we will have some time for feedback about what you, our valued members, want from your Middlesex NASW-NJ unit! Whether you have a topic you want to hear more about, an activity you would like to suggest, or even something you want present, let us know and we will make it happen together!
