Topic: “An Introduction to Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)”
Presenter: Marie Gonzalez, MSW, LCSW

About IFS:
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a process by which individuals are guided by a therapist in a way that makes sense out of what seems to be random thoughts, conflicting ideas and impulsive behaviors.

IFS is similar to Mindfulness in that thoughts, feelings, behaviors and emotions are viewed in a non-judgmental way. IFS therapy takes Mindfulness a step further by not only having an individual witness these thoughts, feelings, moods and behaviors but actually teaching an individual to get to know these parts of themselves as protectors and build a relationship with their authentic self. This is where the healing begins.

Utilizing IFS therapy provides a safe environment by the therapist and the client –having the goal of maintaining respect and compassion for injured parts (extreme thoughts, feelings and behaviors). For a long time these parts have been useful in protecting a person from being overwhelmed by emotional pain, loss, or traumatic experiences. When these parts are compassionately viewed and become aware that there is a self, the next step can be to unburden exiled parts of a person that carry the most pain.
