Harriet Bloomfield Scholarship – Application Deadline June 5, 2017

 

 

 

About the Scholarship


A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a BSW or MSW student for the 2017-2018 academic year. The student must be an NASW member and have applied to or have been accepted into an accredited BSW or MSW program. Payment of the award will be contingent on the full admission of the candidate to the program, and a check will be written by NASW to the school.

Scholarship applications and essays must be received by the NASW-NJ office no later than 5:00 PM on Monday, June 5, 2017.  The scholarship will be awarded by the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship winner must be available for an interview, and the winning essay may be published in NASW-NJ FOCUS newsletter. Please direct all questions to info@naswnj.org.

 

About Harriet Bloomfield

 
The Harriet Bloomfield Memorial Scholarship Fund is dedicated to the memory of a pioneer in Social Work. Harriet was a charter member of NASW.  She worked for the Elizabeth Board of Education before retiring in 1984. She served as director of social services at Bonnie Brae Farm for Boys, Millington from 1956 to 1960 and was with DYFS from 1944 to 1956. She taught at Kean College and Rutgers University and organized the Center for infant Development and teen-parent program in conjunction with the Graduate School of Social Work and the Elizabeth Board of Education.

Harriet served the New Jersey Chapter in a variety of positions. She was first vice-president, chair of the PACE committee, a delegate to the Delegate Assembly and a member of the annual conference committee.  In 1989 the chapter honored her as Social Worker of the Year.  She also served on the board of Jewish Family Services of Central New Jersey, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Community Development Funds in Elizabeth and the Clark Juvenile Conference Committee.

Harriet earned a bachelor of arts in Social Studies from Montclair State College in 1943, a master of arts in social work from Columbia University in 1950 and a supervisor’s certificate from Kean College in 1976.  She was a Fulbright Scholar at the London School of Economics from 1952 to 1953.

Scholarship Guidelines

  1. The applicant must be a NASW New Jersey Chapter member in good standing. Please enclose a copy of your current NASW membership card. Awardee must remain a member in good standing throughout the award period. If candidate is not yet eligible for membership, but will be by the time the scholarship is awarded, please note this on the application. If applicant is selected, the award is contingent upon full membership once eligible.   2. Application and Release of Information form must be submitted by the application deadline.
  3. Biographical essay (two typed, double-spaced pages). Essay must address career goals and interests as well as work, volunteer and school/field experience.
  4. Two letters of support from professional references. Letters must be included with the application and can be written by a candidate's professors; individuals or leaders of groups with whom the candidate has worked in a helping capacity; an employer/supervisor; or other person with knowledge of the applicant's experience in the field of social work/social service.
  5. Copy of a transcript from the most recent academic program (undergraduate or graduate). Copy of previous semester's grades would also be accepted.
  6. If the applicant is not currently enrolled in an accredited BSW or MSW program, provide a letter of acceptance from the program, or a copy of the application to an accredited BSW or MSW program and a letter from the college/university verifying the application has been received.
  7. Mail all materials to:
