Juvenile Justice

NASW-NJ advocates on behalf of the needs of our youth who are involved with the Juvenile Justice System (JJC).

  • Improve transitional services, as successful reintegration is contingent upon such services;
  • Community mental health service providers should be trained in the specific needs of juvenile parolees, including but not limited to: community re-integration and gang issues; and
  • We support addressing the needs of homeless youths who are released from JJC facilities; shelters and DCP&P placements when they are not appropriate and they would benefit from transitional living programs.
  • Engage families more in treatment
  • Additional resources, (ie. screening tools, assessments by staff trained in same) are needed within Juvenile Justice System (JJC) for those suffering from a dual diagnosis disorder.  Many inmates are being housed within Corrections, yet are not being treated appropriately for their mental health diagnosis.  Not having appropriate individual access to Mental Health Support can result in other issues.  (ie:  one with anger management issues may cause a riot, one with a SUD who is going through withdrawal may create conflict among peers or have other undiagnosed health ailments).
  • Inmates, regardless of religious denomination, should be allowed equal access to prayer services within their leadership.
